Itinerary description
When you're reading the Lonely Planet book about Costa Rica you find a section 'off the beaten path' that is about the Selva Bananito Lodge. This lodge is situated at the Talamanca Mountains and gives you a pristine rain forest experience. Unfortunately I didn't spend my nights here, but rather in Caihuita where I stayed as part of an organized tour. One small thing about that: I don't like beaches very much...
And that's why I did a gyrocopter tour with someone from the Selva Bananito Lodge. It cost me an arm and a leg (especially the transportation costs), but it was certainly worth it. The flights was incredible and I asked if I could do a small hike around the lodge as well. That was certainly possible and together with another person from the lodge I did a small hike. There's a certain path that we needed to follow, but half way we lost track and pretty much improvised our way.
The guide was extremely knowledgeable about the nature in Costa Rica and half of the fun was listening to him. The route I took went through a small river, some steep hills and a meadow. Not very special, but to be in the nature of Costa Rica is so nice as all the other national parks require a hefty entrance fee and the parks are fenced off. At Selva Bananito Lodge this was not the case and that's why I enjoyed this short hike so much.
