Itinerary description
Beautiful hike beginning at the Packer Lake parking area. Begin by heading up the road on foot and continue upon a harsh four wheel drive road. You will pass Tamarack Lakes before you begin a good ascent onto a ridge. The trail was snowed in at the time at this point, so it may not be exactly where it will be during the later summer months. However you will eventually reach the top of the ridge, which will lead you to a great view of Young America lake which was frozen still in May, 2009. You will then rise slowly until you reach the switchbacks which rise into the lookout tower. Five men somehow managed to build this entire structure by themselves in the summer of 1964. You will then ascend many steep stairs. Don't let your fear of heights keep you from the beautiful view from the lookout. I rated this trail as Moderate for someone who does hiking often, but may be considered difficult if the trail is snowed in (as it was during my trip).
