Terugkeren doen we langs dezelfde weg.
For the first time in Italy, a two-week holiday in Sicily: maybe the weather wasn't great, but still we could make the planned walk every day and had a great time.
Starting from Piano Provenzana (Etna Nord), the hike begins with a climb through the huge 2002 lava fields, where pale skeletons of dead trees are still standing and laying here and there. The first 2 km we climb from 1,790m to 1,990m next to Monte Nero, and we descend the following 2 km to ... 1,790m.
Initially we follow a wide path, but after 1.2 km we turn right in a right angle and follow a narrow but clearly visible trail. Near Mount Nero, the trail briefly passes through a slightly greener strip, and continues through the 1879 lava field.
Due to the low clouds, the area was gloomy and creepy, the lava colored dark to black. But after 2.7 km we reached the forest and ... the sun also pierced the clouds.
We picnicked at the Rifugio Timparossa.
After 4 km, we leave the wide forest path to the left and take a forest trail as a shortcut. After the forest, the hike continues through the endless 1947 AA and Pahoehoe lava fields. After 5.7 km, the path to Grotta dei Lamponi comes from the right and the ascent to Grotta del Gelo begins. First we pass the Monte dei Morti, then the Grotta di Aci (an endless deep hole) and finally we reach our final goal: the Grotta del Gelo. We return by the same route.
During the descent into the Grotta del Gelo, the temperature clearly dropped, only a few meters lower already made a big difference ! At the deepest point, due to the cold, our breathing was visible as little clouds, and we even found some ice (at the end of the summer).
When we left the cave a sudden and very close thunder surprised us completely, so we fled quickly, but fortunately the thunderstorm didn’t follow us and the weather remained clear on our way back.
When we returned to Monte Nero, Mount Etna clearly showed signs of starting activity, while we hiked with a guide at the top just 2 days before !
On our last night in Sicily, we clearly noticed more activity on the webcams and at 9:30 pm we still left the hotel: first we drove to Rifugio Sapienza (Etna Sud), but the best view we got here at Piano Provenzana (Etna Nord).
