Itinerary description

Beautiful wild trail going through small rivers. The path is fun, but requires some route finding and scrambling between rivers and bushes. We started from Shugakuin station of the Eizan railway, then went up through the normal route to the Hieizan. A small deviation at km#3 allowed us to explore a hidden shortcut (quite challenging to get there because of the many fallen trees). Halfway to the Hiei (about 370m altitude), we took the path of the 2 rivers (part of the Kyoto trail) and then headed left to the side path through the stone tori. Here begins the scrambling through the river paths, which continues all the way till you hit the car road #30. At this point we took a short walk on the car road, bought some drinks from a vending machine and crossed a small bridge to the second part of the route up to Daimonji-yama. Here the path is mostly through the forest and it's easy to get lost without GPS positioning (the trail disappears in the bush multiple times). Once on top of the Daimonji, the view of Kyoto is stunning! Probably the best you can have of the area! Overall a very fun and not so physically challenging hike, quite slow because of the trail conditions. Due to the many rivers I strongly advice against it in rainy/wet conditions.
