Itinerary description
A tribute walk to the most admired man in South Africa. It starts at the Palace of Justice where Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison for treason and ends at his towering statue in front of the Union Building. It is an urban walk through the streets of Pretoria, past Tshwane University along Nelson Mandela Drive. Turn right on Madiba Street (Madiba is the name his supporters, friends, inmates and family called him) and arrive at the Union Buildings. There are several monuments along the way the most revered being Mandela in front of the capital buildings.
His autobiography, written in part while spending 25 years in jail at Robben Island, is called "A Long Walk to Freedom" and chronicles his lifetime struggle to end Apartheid. The hike is physically easy, but the history of events that surround this journey make it difficult.
