Itinerary description
The Shirland Canal part of this recording is an easy flat hike, however, there are a few rocky areas and some narrow trail areas with steep drop-offs. Turning around at mile 2.6 (at a residential street called Eagle’s Nest) would make a fine out’n’back hike of 5.6 miles.
We decided to add some hills to our hike so we took a little known trail, Eagle’s Nest Connector Trail. The trail is unmarked and not visible from the street but at mile 3, look for the ravine on your right and you’ll see the dirt trail leading down steeply into the ravine. This part of the trail has a steep grade varying from 10-36% with areas of ankle-busting rocks but the beauty of this ravine was well worth the careful descent.
CAUTION: At mile 4.8 to 5.0, the trail is but a mere “animal track” and has an extremely steep grade varying from 28° to 49°. Standing is near impossible in places and hands were used multiple times. Good thing, though, it’s only 2/10th’s of a mile.
