The Seven Rila Lakes are a group of glacial lakes, located in northwestern Bulgaria in the Rila Mountains. They are the most visited group of lakes in Bulgaria. The lakes are located between 2,100 and 2,500 meters above sea level. Each lake bears a name associated with its most characteristic feature.
The highest is called Salzata ("The Tear") for its clear waters that allow in-depth visibility. The next in height is named Okoto ("The Eye") after its almost perfectly oval shape. Okoto is the deepest circus lake in Bulgaria, with a depth of 37.5 m. Babreka ("The Kidney") is the lake with the steepest shores of the whole group. Bliznaka ("The Twin") is the largest by area. Trilistnika ("The Clover") has an irregular shape and low edges. The shallowest lake is Ribnoto Ezero ("Fish Lake") and the lowest is Dolnoto Ezero ("Lower Lake"), where water from other lakes gathers to form the Dzherman River.
We take a chairlift to the refuge of the Seven Lakes at 2150 m where we start a circular route in which we pass 5 of the 7 lakes and see one more from afar. The route is well signposted and has no special difficulties.
Every year, from August 19 to 21, followers of the doctrine of Peter Deunov, the Universal White Brotherhood, celebrate sunrise with rituals accompanied by music, dressed entirely in white, spinning in circles at the plateau next to Lake Kidney.
