Itinerary description
Indeed, a very nice trail in one of the most emblematic Portuguese mountain ranges, the Marão, which together with the Montemuro mountain range blocks the Atlantic winds, thus transforming the Douro Wine Valley into an exceptional wine producing region.
The flora is nice and varied and almost no trace of eucalyptus trees, which is quite something in this country. I wouldn't suggest the views to be spectacular, but rather enjoyable with very good moments. Of course I would have preferred not to be accompanied for some kilometers by the A4 highway, which could be seen at first far away until it got closer just to metamorphose into the Marão Tunnel, the third longest in the Iberian Peninsula. In fact, I just climbed exactly where the western entrance begins. Along the way I passed through a typical village with some amazing granite houses and grain reservoirs, met some very calm, polite and religious locals, and saw some insects, birds and a lizard .
This trail offers many changes, but the ground is almost always even posing no difficulties whatsoever. And that's the reason why I decided do mark it easy, in spite of the last 4 ascending kilometers, that made me understand I could have been in a better shape. If I was to do this trail again, I would go CCW.
