Itinerary description

A technically easy but fairly strenuous walk on the ancient access road up to Marvão, starting in the aptly named village of Portagem. Follows the official PR1 MRV route, except this route takes in the centre of the wonderful and unique town of Marvão. If you get a chance, I would strongly recommend seeing Marvão like this for the first time: i.e. walking up the way people did in medieval times.

The route starts by the river bath in Portagem. Note that there are several routes originating here, so it can get very confusing trying to follow signs here. It seems like this particular route, PR1, is not marked down here at all, and virtually all signs are for other routes, so I recommend following these signs with caution.

Once we get out of Partagem, we simply follow the old walking trail up the hill. There is only really one intersection to be aware of which is the one we turn left - we will be coming back from the route to the right.

Once up in the town I would strongly recommend having a wander around, even thought the official route does not go through the town. It would be a strange thing to climb all this way and not actually see the town, castle and walls from the inside.

After leaving town again, it is a gentle descent around the hill facing the east of town. Eventually we come to the intersection we were at earlier and from then on it is just a matter of walking back the way we came.
