Itinerary description
An easy walk following the official PR1 route starting and ending in Castelo de Vide. Great views and highly recommended way to see the town of Castelo de Vide for the first time if you get the chance.
The walk starts next to a church close to the town centre and leads you southeast out of town past some ancient fountains. After a bit of tarmac, we are able to cross a valley and get climbing up on to the ridge southeast of Castelo de Vide, with fantastic views of the town.
About halfway through the walk, there is the Nossa Senhora da Penha Chapel on the summit of the hill you are walking on. I'm not sure if climbing up to this is part of the official PR1 route, but this walk certainly has this great viewpoint as part of the walk.
After this we continue in woodland on medieval walkways, past some more fountains here and there. The water is most likely drinkable but there are no tests of this water being done so probably safest to not drink too much if at all.
Once we are down in the valley again, the official route leads us through some roads with dwellings. As can be seen on the route, I had to backtrack at one point due to a pack of angry dogs. I can usually deal with dogs individually, but a pack that egg each other on is something best avoided. Fortunately it was not that complicated to find an alternate route.
Another deviation from the official route versus this one is at the end, where this route goes in a little bit into the centre of town to have a look, rather than just speed along to the start/end point. But eventually we go though the town back towards where we began.
Another little note about this walk is that there were some incredibly aggressive midges flying around my face at all times outside the town. I don't think that should make you skip the walk, but if you happen to be sensitive to that it might be worth keeping in mind. I think I spent over half the time waving my hands around my face but they just wouldn't give up. This walk was in mid September.
