Itinerary description

This was far from being a nice hiking tour from a landscape point of view. The small village Trebilhadouro where I started CCW, though empty like so many villages in Portugal, is well taken cared of. They surely make an effort to attract some kind of green tourism, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, this effort stops when it comes to forest management, where once again the eucalyptus is the dominating tree all around. And that's a shame. It really is. There is no color nuance, the magnificent yellows and reds are missing from the equation, and only the sad dark and silver green is what's left down the valley, as if Fall never had a chance to arrive here. And Fall is such a delicate and fancy season that should be welcome everywhere...

So, the first third of the track was quite boring and frustrating, only getting better with the arriving of the higher altitudes, where a few pine trees could be spotted, probably the survivors of some recent fire. But getting better doesn't mean the landscape was great. It wasn't. There were some good moments, but there was also a deep feeling of desolation. The only animals I saw were a single beautiful butterfly and a few birds. Other than that, the biodiversity was quite low. A special note goes to the wedge shaped grain stores that could be seen in the region, very mysterious and interesting, and the terraces on some slopes.
