Itinerary description
This certainly is an exceptional trail for many good reasons. The scenery is wide and breath taking, the rural world catching, the fauna and flora captivating, and the general feeling compelling. In other words, it seems you are walking through the paths of some distant dreamlike past.
The name 'PEDRAS BROAS' derives from some big granite blocks that look like the crust of a special bread known as broa. This amazing result is the product of differential erosion. In fact, some of the landscapes were gigantic open air museums and Nature the master.
There are some villages along the way which present some good moments of curious ancient architecture.
Here follows a list of some of the animals I remember to have seen. A few birds of prey which included an eagle and a falcon, hoopoes, swallows, larks, common blackbirds, a common wood pigeon, and many others I was not able to identify. Two species of lizards, probably the iberian wall lizard and a bigger one, maybe the iberian emerald or the ocellated, and a slowworm. I also saw many different butterflies, bees, grasshoppers, and heard crickets. And of course, I came across a few herds of cows crazing peacefully. Though they are normally docile, I always make a detour if possible, especially in the open where there is no place to hide. One never knows when one of them decides to run amok.
The vegetation is mostly low often decorated with beautiful different colored flowers.
In my opinion, doing this trail CW is the right decision. Take good mountain boots due to the uneven ground and water, which I found hard to come across in this rather dry country.
