Itinerary description

In August 2007 I had the good fortune to be a member of a group of hikers doing a four day trek along the shores of the majestic Sermilik fjord in Eastern Greenland. We flew into Kulusuk airport, were transported by speedboat to the village of Kummiut, where we spent the first night. The next morning we were taken by boat to the point where our trek would start, four days later we arrived at the village of Tiniteqillaq - where we were again picked up by boat. A thoroughly enjoyable trip.

Waypoints

Cairn 1

12-AUG-07 16:19:31 It's easy to lose your way on this mountain - look out for this cairn! If you study the track closely you will see a dogleg (bend) just before the cairn - you should skip that and head straight for the cairn.

Cairn 2

12-AUG-07 19:10:35 This cairn marks the highest point on the mountain - great views.

Camp 1

09-AUG-07 17:31:27 We camped on the shores of "Laksesöen" (Salmon Lake) which had burst its banks - I moved my tent further away than where I originally pitched it. During the night a couple of foxes raided our camp, gnawed the straps off both my trekking poles and stole a gaiter from one of the others! Since this had been a short day we did a brief afternoon hike up into the hanging valley (Solporten - "the Sun Port") overlooking our camp.

Camp 2

10-AUG-07 22:11:27 A lovely camp site with a fantastic view over the fjord, the only (slight) disadvantage was having to go a hundred yards or so to fetch water.

Camp 3

11-AUG-07 22:25:09 We camped on the shore of a small mountain tarn where we fecthed our water - only to discover the next morning that we could have fetched running water from a brook a hunbdred yards further along our route. As shown in the photo album we were visited by foxes at the camp site.

Disembarkment

09-AUG-07 14:19:14 This is where the boat dropped us off. This was actually a bit problematic because of low tide - if you want to get off on this side of the fjord (many people apparently use the other side) then you might want to aim for high tide.

Night 4

13-AUG-07 12:02:14 The locals were very hospitable and allowed us to sleep in the town laundry (well, "communal facility" would be more accurate, because this building serves a number of purposes).
