Itinerary description

This is stage 2 of the old mule trail 'il sentiero del viandante', starting in Lierna and ending in Varenna. For stage 1,see this link: https://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=27655665.

The trail starts with a very steep ascent, which continues without respite to the top of the mountain. Most of the hike is through the forest, walking on rock or soil, and with plenty of shade. There are a few meadows along the way that offer pleasant rest points, and there are many spectacular viewpoints.

The only source of water is near the San Pietro chapel close to the top. That area is also accessible by car, and you may find many day trippers enjoying the space. After a short, relatively flat hike around the top, you'll face a steep descent down to Varenna. The trail is easy to follow all the way, but the steep climb makes it somewhat challenging.
