Itinerary description
This is stage 1 of the old mule trail 'il sentiero del viandante', from Abbadia Lariana to Lierno. The trail goes through old towns and forest paths, crosses small streams, and offers magnificent outlooks onto lake Como.
The trail starts and ends at a train station, so that you can do it all using only public transportation. When we walked it some parts of the old path were closed for maintenance, so we had to take some detours. Both the main trail and the detours are well-marked.
The terrain is mostly easy to traverse, but there are some steep climbs and descents. There are many eater fountains in the towns along the way, so if you take a 1 litre canteen, you should be able to keep it replenished. In the middle of the trail there is a small waterfall with rapids in the stream, which is very pleasant to rest for a while. Altogether it is a worthwhile hike.
