Itinerary description

The border line established in 1947 was for many years monitored by foot patrols, and above all by the Yugoslav side manned almost continuously with watchtowers and masking holes. The control on foot on that side was carried out day and night by conscripts, mostly from the more internal regions of the "Federation", less inclined to escape to the "West". Vague traces remain, even reported but nevertheless neglected. On the other hand, in Italy, today path 79 is well maintained (Abramo Schmid from its enhancer), who defined it as "the curb" due to the characteristic successions of karst stones at the edges, useful for not dispersing the patrollers (at night) and to avoid border accidents. Our starting point coincides with the end of that path and develops in the opposite direction - still close to the border but in Slovenia. He is not the only one of this name "Graničari" to still remember the abuses and ambushes of that time.

from Medeazza west (Agritur "Luciana") follow the road indicated for Brestovizza past two large noticeboards indicating the distance from the border (450 then 150). At the zero point (cippi to the side) the "Italian" path 79 begins on the left, a few steps further to the right entering Slovenia, just signposted, the path to Grižnik towards the hill above

the path is decidedly neglected (I compare the experience of previous years) Typical vegetation of the karst bush with a prevalence of "sumcaie" in Cotinus coggyigria, not only shrubs

Pass situation, highest point compared to the Griznik peak near this point. The height in front is m. Gredina (246) settlement of a hillfort with a wall visible in winter and limited vegetation. To the north, the Brestovizza valley with its slopes burned in the 2022 fire.

deviation from the Graniciari path, towards Brestovizza. I look for signs for the climb to Gredina, which I can't find: instead I look at a characteristic limestone quarry site (Apnenica) of indeterminable age. A few minutes and you return to the crossroads where, crossing what was once the Provincial Road 1 of the new Province of Trieste (SP1 Jamiano - medeazza - Malchina) you pick up the Graniciari trail here where a faded sign celebrates the Prague kajserjager of 1916. Rain in the woods, but not boring! Always a breath away from the state border you go up the "Ermada Fortress". The SP 1 in 1930 was as it was (natural surface) and traveled mainly by trucks, also serving the quarrymen.

Ermada

One among a thousand near the path: remains of an Austro-Hungarian position at the edge of the "trenched camp" surrounding the Mount Ermada complex. Even as you continue you come across hundreds of cavities carved into the rock as a shelter for the garrison troops. the most characteristic ones can be visited (with equipment). In Slovenia by reservation

Grotta del Conte ( o del fuoco)

Property attribute (see: Sinkhole of the former Count Lord of Duino) The names change, what remains is the enormous semi-artificial cavity which, otherwise used in ancient times, gave refuge to hundreds of soldiers during the Italian-Austrian conflict (on special wooden shelves , equipped with ventilation and lighting). Visitable by reservation

technically for us anti-summit, the highest point for today and closest to Anti-summit 280, which is beyond the border (in Italy). In the photo the western panorama (Doberdò)

With a few steps you reach the intermediate stone (witness?) 17th between vertices 67 and 68 of the broken international border line (Treaty of Paris): on its head it bears the alignment between the closest stones. If the "end" stone or vertex 1 is on Mount Forno in Tarvisio, the last one is on the sea, towards Muggia (TS). You have to go beyond the "break" (repatriate) and take the wide track of Path 3. In ancient times, "Term" was a god! Don't touch it!

Left for the "real" Ermada peak and the continuation along the borders on the Trieste karst. To return I follow 3, then 3 A for Medeazza. The hopes of seeing a flowering wild peony are diminishing, perhaps I am early. I'm happy with what I find

Pilone

Cave named after Zita&Carlo (Duchess of Parma, wife of Karl I of Habsburg, last emperor). Also called "DELLA GAVETTA" or "del Pilone" (conspicuous power line a few meters away). It's stopped raining and I have a nice sandwich, a beer at the right temperature, with a comfortable seat and little ants. I'm happy, I found a vintage button. Very rare, for a shirt!

Sentiero 3x medeazza

Meeting of workers involved in the maintenance of underground metal structures. In this place in 2003, with the laying of the methane pipeline, the first exotic plants appeared, perhaps sown by crawlers. When they tell you that methane and oil pipelines, once covered, do not disturb the environment....

I choose a long detour to Medeazza via Casali Kohisce: path three continues along the oil pipeline track, which drops steeply over the ridge onto the town. hard to go up, hard to come down. the detour is much more relaxing. It's interesting

Kohišče, storica Fattoria (del Conte)

The town of Medeazza has the sad record of two devastations in twenty years (1916 - 1944). This farm (by virtue of the owner?) at least survived the Nazi-fascist fury unscathed, producing until the 1960s. A pleasant place for romantic meetings in youth, it is experiencing a certain tourist revival. Here, however, I rejoin the itineraries already described (Dolina del Conte - Coisce): we continue calmly for 45 minutes, descending to Medeazza. And maybe you'll come across some mushrooms...
