Itinerary description

The amazing walk through one of the deepest and finest gorges in Europe, the Verdon Gorge. This is a one way walk so you'll need to make use of the bus service to get you to the start at La Maine. We caught the bus all the way from Castellane as we didn't have a car but most drive to Post Sublime and catch the bus from there. I recommend you have a coffee where the bus drops you off, its great coffee and its the last chance for 5-6 hours!

The walk starts with a 1000ft decent down to the river, it isn't as bad as it sounds, the path is good and the views are breathtaking. When we reached the signpost at the bottom we went right for 20 minutes to see the bridge and then came back to head in the direction of Post Sublime.

There are no early exits from this walk, once you are in you are in for the duration so make sure you are happy to walk for 4-6 hours over rocky terrain. The walk is possible for anyone with a reasonable amount of fitness and there isn't anything a regular hiker would find difficult.

Don't attempt the walk in bad weather, the water running down into the valley can make this dangerous.

Take plenty water with you, we took 2 litres per person. You'll need a torch or good phone torch for the tunnels one is 670m long and pitch black. There is also shallow water in the tunnel at points.

Famous Bridge

This bridge was washed away in 2004, luckily it has been rebuilt. It's worth the detour to see it (see the video link where we take the detour). There is a great walk over the other side of the bridge GR99. more technical than this route in terms of some simple climbing. Cross the bridge and turn right for the best bits but don't go too far as you've got a long walk to Pont Sublime.

We easily walked much quicker the the times listed. I guess these are worst case scenarios

Not too many places on the walk to see the river but when you do you'll need to be getting the camera out

Warnings of the Dangers

Don't be put off by the warnings, it is only dangerous for the totally inexperienced. I saw children doing the walk with there parents.

The metal work on the route can be very dirty so you may want gloves or hand wash.
