Sensoji Temple (浅 草 寺) is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. Located in the Asakusa neighborhood, it is dedicated to Kannon, the deity of mercy. Legend has it that it was built here when in the seventh century two brothers found a statue of Kannon on the Sumida River and it was decided to consecrate it in a small temple so that all the inhabitants could worship it.
The story caught the attention of many pilgrims from all over Japan and little by little the temple was gaining in fame and importance. In the Edo period, when the pleasure district of Yoshiwara was created near Asakusa, the temple continued to gain popularity and that was when the third Tokugawa shogun built the vast majority of the buildings that constitute the temple complex that we can see today in day.
However, many of these buildings were destroyed during the Second World War bombings that reduced a large part of Tokyo to ashes and debris, so they were rebuilt years later. But some of the original constructions remain intact.
