Konavle is located in the southern tip of Croatia, in the southeastern part of the current bank of Dubrovnik, and it is a land with which the Republic of Dubrovnik in the fifteenth century completed its territory.
The name Konavle comes from the Latin word canale, canalis, and in the local language "Konali", "kanali", which is related to the water supply that during Roman times brought water from Vodovađa in Epidaurus today Cavtat .
It is a land of contrasts, of elevations and plains, mountains and karst, blue and green, or as the inhabitants of Konavle say the high and low bands. The North is surrounded by hills; the South looks at the Adriatic, the East extends to the very entrance of the Boka Kotorska Bay and the Prevlaka Peninsula, and the West reaches the Bay of Cavtat and Obod; while the central part is a very fertile field.
We started the route in ČILIPI, which can be said to be the cultural center of Konavle. From Palm Sunday until the last Sunday of September, after the mass, around 11 am, a folkloric spectacle is celebrated in the square, as it coincides that the day of our visit is a Sunday, we cross the streets with their inhabitants dressed in traditional costumes.
The town was burned down during the last Balkan war, although it is currently in a magnificent state of preservation (only the church remained standing, although entering it we could see some statues mutilated by the aggressors, which the inhabitants preferred to keep like this and that give us goosebumps, as well as a piano crushed by the unreasonableness of the war).
From the church we take NW direction, we pass by an old circular "era" with stone sign and continue through an area of orchards and fruit trees.
Soon we enter between a lush vegetation with different species of trees (pines, cypresses, strawberry trees, oaks, oaks ...)
We quickly arrive at a path where we find a multitude of stone crosses that correspond to a ceremony / procession to bless the fields. Next to the path it is possible to find some endemic plant species, as well as aromatic plants of the region.
The route is easy to follow. It is only necessary to follow the various indicators that we find, and leave the various transversal paths that lead to the bathing areas or other places that are not our path.
At km 5.5 we must take the NE direction in the direction of MOCICI. Arriving at the entrance of the town, we found a small chapel.
We follow the street in NW direction, at the end of the town we follow a detour (something hidden) that takes us among the undergrowth to a relief engraved in the rock dedicated to the god Mitra dated between the II and IV centuries that despite everything is well preserved. This relief is above the entrance of a cave on an old well, fountain, spring or laundry.
In the central part, a bull appears with a young man (the god Mitra) with the turned head that is on top of the animal, standing with one foot on the shoulder and the other on the hind legs; a dog attacks the antler's neck which causes it to bleed; below, a scorpion and a serpent appear; top to the left a seven-armed star; on the right side a half moon; Both youngsters are located on both sides (dadofor).
The young man who is about to sacrifice the bull is the god Mitra. The bull is a symbol of the living being and has to be sacrificed so that its blood will water the fields so that the wildlife resurfaces. The evil spirit is represented by the scorpion and the serpent, which in a vain attempt to prevent it, try to destroy the functions of life by attacking the genitals of the bull. The two young men (dadophorae) represent life and death, one with one arm raised, the other with the arm lowered. The star and the moon are the symbols of day and night, of joy and sadness. The star is the symbol of the sun with 7 radios, a sacred number, which indicates the seven mystic degrees. The dog is the guardian of the soul of a dying bull who wants to destroy evil.
After enjoying a good time in this pleasant place, we return along the same road to Mocici, to continue along a narrow street, which descends next to a house in SW direction.
We return to enter the vegetation, along a path between stone curtains, until reaching a height with good views of the Adriatic, the mountains and the airport.
We continue in NW direction in continuous descent until Cavtat, seat of the City council of Konavle.
After walking along a paved road along a residential area, we arrived next to a small cemetery and a small hermitage. Here we take NW direction until reaching the port.
After making a small stop to regain strength, we continue along the beautiful path that surrounds the peninsula, enjoying its spectacular views over the Adriatic, who may want to take a bath in one of its small coves ... Finally we reach the parking where we give finished this route.
