Itinerary description
Semois: Les Échelles de Rochehaut et Les Crêtes de Frahan
One of Belgium’s finest dayhikes!
Start walk/parking:
Rue de la Cense 3
6830 Rochehaut (Bouillon)
49,83992° N, 5,00425° O
If you only want to walk the ladders route (Les Echelles de Rochehaut) it will take you about 2 hours to walk over 5.5 kilometers. This part of the walk is signed with a red rectangular and the number 43.
In Rochehaut, pass the church and walk uphill for almost a kilometer through some streets. Soon you’ll reach the forest and start descending towards the Semois. When you reach a sign that says: “Not for sensitive people” you soon hit a bit more rocky terrain where you have to watch your step now and then.
Keep following de red 43 signs and the next part of the walk passes by some hangrails and 4 ladders.
After 5.5 kilometers you’ll come to a crossroads. Here you can go right to get back to Rochehaut or go left to continue this walk towards Poupehan and les Cretes de Frahan.
The easy path through the forest towards Poupehan is a welcoming change!
In Poupehan you’ll find a few campings, a bistro and an auberge.
Cross the bridge over La Semois and begin the climb towards two great panoramic spots: Pic du Midi and La Roche a Precher. Both spots have a bench to enjoy the views.
After our break at La Roche a Precher we continued our walk via a nice stroll through the forest, initially staying high and slowly descending towards Les Croissetes along the N893, which you have to cross.
We are now heading towards Les Crêtes de Frahan, which are reached by a 50 meter climb. Les Crêtes are a very nice piece of nature to wander through. Now and then some ladders are provided to make the passage easier.
Leaving Les Crêtes behind you start descending towards the beautifully situated village Frahan.
In Frahan you’ll find a B&B, a little bar, a hotel and a restaurant.
We continue towards the pedestrian bridge over La Semois.
What’s left is one more climb to get back to the car.
