NOTICE: It is understood that anyone who wants to do this same route assumes the responsibility that an activity entails that is not exempt from possible risks or incidents, in an environment in which common sense and circumstances can make the difference between having a good day or the opposite.
We have been in Uganda for a week and a half, and after having visited the white rhino sanctuary in Ziwa, where we were able to walk next to a group of four females, and shortly after next to a mother and her calf, as well as having tracked the chimpanzees in the Budongo forest, where we were very close and listened, but in the end we could not see, and after having traveled through the Murchison and Quen Elizabeth national parks; We have come to the Virunga mountains, on the border with Rwanda and the Congo, to see the impressive mountain gorillas.
For this we are in the Bwindi National Park, where unlike with the chimpanzees, here we are guaranteed that it is very rare to leave without seeing the gorillas. First thing in the morning, a meeting of all the tourists authorized to see the families of gorillas, with the head of the rangers who gives us the guidelines to follow, as well as the groups of no more than eight people that with several rangers we will the monitoring of a family of gorillas, for a little more or less an hour, from the moment in which we establish contact with said family. Once the groups are formed, we take the SUVs that distribute us through different areas of the national park. Our group, made up of seven people, travels to an area that is just over half an hour away, before starting the walk. Walk that at first runs through an inhabited area and with farm fields, until when we reach a small hill we start a steep ascent, first by a small path already in the middle of the jungle, and after half an hour we leave the narrow path to start a sharp descent, in which although they are opening the way for us with machetes, however the path cannot be seen, nor often step on solid ground, product of the dense vegetation through which we move. We are lucky, since when the forces of several of the group began to waver, we have the first contact with a silverback male, who although he is not the leader, however, quickly joins the rest of the group, in which in addition to now yes the boss, we can also see several offspring and females. We spend an hour chasing them through the impenetrable forest, and getting closer to everyone who allows us, both the rangers and the gorillas themselves, who surprise us with their patience and docility. When we want to realize, the maximum sighting time has passed and they give us the guideline to leave them to return, now climbing without any path, until we reach the same path that returns us to the hill where we will eat and they will give us the diploma -accreditation of the unforgettable experience.
