Itinerary description
Many hikers in the Margalla Hills call this trail the second ridge. It's a 28km long path starting from Mackhniyal on the Pir Sohawa Road and ending near Khanpur dam at Rajdhani. The trail is mostly straightforward, following the ridge line with minimal uphill climbs. Along the way, you'll pass through villages like Gokina, Talhaar, Bhaka, and Karwali.
The trail offers beautiful views of Rawal Lake on the left and Khanpur on the right. Be cautious around Bhaka village, as a rocky and narrow section can be a bit tricky for about 40-50 meters. Take care to avoid any falls or injuries.
The Rajdhani Village provides stunning views of Khanpur dam and the expansive valley. The last part of the trail is a concrete road, about 4km long. If you're not a fan of a long walk, consider hitchhiking to the main road for convenience.
Remember to carry enough water, as there might not be water sources along the trail. While there are a few taps near holy shrines, it's uncertain if the water is safe to drink, so using a filter is recommended. Plan to reach the main road at Rajdhani before dusk, as local transport may be scarce after that. Ideally, aim to be in the area two hours before dusk to ensure a smooth return to Islamabad or wherever you parked your car.
