Itinerary description
The path climbs up behind the Royal Stables with steep sections and challenging rocky parts that require some skill. At the beginning of the route and at the top of the climb you will meet reforested areas while along the valley you will cross a suggestive rocky landscape where you can observe the main neo-endemic plant species such as the dwarf palm, the rock carnation, the pearl grass, as well as the great birds of prey of the Reserve such as the Buzzard, the Peregrine Falcon and the Kestrel. Of considerable interest are the remains of rural structures that are encountered along the route that testify to the "sacred" vocation of the mountain. Before arriving at our destination we find the Gorgo di S. Rosalia, a temporary pond where the Sicilian Emerald Toad reproduces (where in 1958, the famous American scientist George Evelyn Hutchinson made discoveries that led to a review of evolutionary biology). From here, continuing along the path, you reach via Monte Ercta and then the Sanctuary of S. Rosalia.
