Itinerary description
From Lofer, follow the 311 and turn left into the Loferer Hochtal. The small road leads to a parking place from where the hike starts.
The steep path is marked 601 and leads upwards through a beech forest to the karst area from where you can catch a first glimpse of the Schmidt-Zabierow hut.
The mountain scenery is spectacular and very dramatic.
Make sure you visit the hut. People are very friendly and they have good food and soups. They can give good advice if you want to climb one or more peaks in the area (Hinterhorn, Gr. Ochsenhorn, ...). It all depends on your time schedule and the weather if it is possible or not. You might consider spending one night in the hut.
The hike from the parking area to the hut takes 4 to 6 hours.
Tips:
The parking lot in the Loferer Hochtal is protected against cattle. At the entrance you will see two electric cables. The ends of those cables are covered in rubber so you can drive the car through. However, sometimes the rubber can be damaged and the metal inside might scratch your car. This happened to me.
So, you should check the rubber before entering.
