Itinerary description
We found this walk on the following website:
https://www.wanderkompass.de/Thueringer-Wald/schmalkalden.html
It is route number four, a very lovely walk.
The first part of the walk leads you up through a quiet residential part of the city and as soon as you leave the last houses you have a superb view to the west.
The next part is along open fields and will lead you to the hamlet called Röthof, after which you will disappear into the woods and gradually descend towards the Walhotel in Ehrental.
When you reach the Waldhausstrasse you will follow this road along a track, starting at the Carl Wilhelm Hütte, that goes gently up and down alongside the road to a Waldhaus overlooking the Barfusspark where you can see and feel all kinds of different stone surfaces.
At the Barfusspark the track turns sharply to the south east, still going through the woods until you reach the open fields again and you will again enjoy magnificent views to the east on the Kohlberg (569m.) and the Komberg (496m.) and, from the long bench made from one tree, the longest in Thüringen, you will even see the Mittener Höhenberg (836m.)
From the bench the track will hold its beautiful views for 500 metres more, following the "Allee aus 40 Bäumen des Jahres" and then goes steeply down to the starting point of the walk.
We took the opportunity to visit the old part of the town after the walk so that is why it is longer than the original 10.6 km.

I liked the old town of Schmalkalden better than the hills around.
But the combination of the 2 makes it a nice walk.
Thanks for your reaction, we felt the same about this walk
