Itinerary description
This is the first day of a total of six doing the “Schluchtensteig” in the Black Forest. If you have your own private vehicle you can park it for free in Wehr (for example, at the former train station), which is the destination of day 6. In this case you can then go to Stühlingen, the starting point on day 1, by public transport. We did this, combining transportation by train and bus. At the end of each day/ stage we spent the night at a local hotel or hostel.
The Schluchtensteig does not present any special technical difficulties. The only thing that makes it “moderate” instead of “easy” is the length of each stage, around 20 km, and the weight of your backpack if you decide to carry everything for six days.
There are also companies that arrange the transportation of backpacks or suitcases for those who want to hike lightly.
This first stage starts in Stühlingen and ends in Blumberg.
Before heading out of Stühlingen, you can get yourself for free the “Wanderpass” (booklet) in several shops. You obtain a stamp every day, the first one in the shop and the rest usually at your hotel. These stamps proof you have walked the Steig. At the last stage you show the Wanderpass, which you can keep, and will be given a small souvenir.
Official information about the Steig can be found at https://www.schluchtensteig.de/ (at the time of writing in German only).
The first stage is quite varied, often following the course of the small river Wutach. You get to see fields and forest and walk on narrow paths and wider country lanes. Only at the end there is a steeper climb. There are several benches on the way, some with tables, most of them near a field and with a view.
