Itinerary description
The hike starts near the National Scout Centre at the southern end of Lough Dan in Oldbridge. To access the start point if the hike drive to Oldbridge. In Oldbridge follow the signs for Lough Dan signed posted 'no through road'. There is car parking space for a limited number of cars at the end of this road. There is a barrier that prevents access by vehicles. Park here and walk along the tarmac road and follow the signs for Wicklow Way for aproximately 4 kms. Keep an eye for the Wicklow way sign off the road. Take right anf follow Wicklow Way sign on to a path and continie uphill until you find a gate and patch of spruce tree on the otherside of the gate. At this point follow the path up to the right. Thiere is a broad path that continues gradual ascent to Scarr mountain. In October 2017 much of the heather on the left side of the path as we walk uphill was burnt due to a fire.
There are excellent views from Scarr mountain summit (648m). On our descent we have panoramic views of Lough Dan and nearby Knocknacloghoe mountain. We continue our descent and reach Kanturch back to our start point at the car park.
The hike takes 5 hours to complete. Terrain is mucky due to path erosion on the sencond half of the hike.
Nearby town for refreshments is Laragh.
