Itinerary description
Day 14. Scarr 641m, Wicklow, Eire (Hewitt).
On many of the peak bagging/outdoor websites I perused for this trip I noted there were very few route descriptions regarding ascents of the lesser known Irish Marilyns. This also applied to the availability of gpx files. I will therefore add relevant information and files that hopefully will provide assistance to future hikers/peakbaggers.
The start point of this walk is just North of the village of Laragh. Here there is a large car park at Glenmacnass Waterfall. If you have a bus this car park will take it.
Cross the road and you will find the main path to Scarr but my up route goes a tad to the right on another path. With the low cloud it was the only photo view I was going to get today of the beautiful Glenmacnass valley. I then cut up to the path and was in the cloud all the way up to the cairned summit of Scarr. This route takes in the rocky knoll of Kanturk as well so simply retrace your steps and go directly North to Kanturk and then cut across open country down to rejoin the main path and you will soon be back at the car park.
Parking: Large car park at Glenmacnass Waterfall car park.
Route: Pretty distinct footpaths and a bit of open country. The paths were still boggy in April however. Not that steep or long a route but a good work out. Nice views down the valley and I guess the views up high would be great on a good weather day.
Statistics: 6.5km with 317m of height gain done in 1hr 48min.
