Itinerary description
This is a circular trail in Saxon Switzerland which is a combination of green and red trails covering quite a few attractions in the Park - Wild Hole (Wilde Hölle), Carolafelsen, Frienstein-Idagrotte, Kuhstall and Lichtenhainer Waterfall.
Fantastic views all along the trail of various rock formations and beautiful forest, very lush vegetation and small streams.
I would recommend to follow the trail in the direction we did it as it saves you efforts.
The total length of the trail is a bit shorter, I guess 1-1,5 kms was added by the app due to GPS signal loss inside the rocks.
NB: I suppose due to invasion of bark beetles a lot of pines were destroyed, while some were intentionally cut down other fell naturally clogging the trails, thus one should be extra vigilant as those continue to fall further in case they are not yet fully laying on the ground.
Parking is possible at the trail start (7 EUR per day) however the place is limited. You may drive about 600-700 m further for a bigger one.
TERRAIN: great variety of various trails - gravel roads, forest paths, walking on builders, climbing by ladders and stairs, a bit of via ferrata.
In the 1st third of the trail it is constant ascent, a mild one in the beginning with rather sharp elevation from Wild Hole and up. Wild Hole is one the most difficult parts of the trail with quite some climbing and via ferrata elements. The rest of the trail can be categorized as moderate or moderate+. One more sharp elevation at the end of the route to reach Kuhstall.
Quite big part of the path from Freinstein-Indagrotte to Kuhstall may as well be considered as difficult due to a lot of fallen trees on the way, hopefully this part will be cleaned sooner or later.
SEASON: dry season is better (summer or Indian summer), in rainy season or winter some of the trail parts will be really hard to walk - mud and slippery stones and rocks.
SIGNS: plenty of various signs and marks to guide you. Some benches and a lot of natural spots to rest. At Kuhstall there is a small cafe/restaurant. No drinking water en route.
KIDS: this particular route is better for 9-10 yo kids minimum and they better be trained.
