Itinerary description
An excellent walk from Sarkina, you climb steadily up the side of one valley with great views. You then go over the top of the ridge to see the valley to the other side with views out to the main Paleochora road. You walk along the side of that valley and then climb back to the ridge and come back down through the first valley taking in some some olive groves along the way. The bar in Sarakina is good.
Waypoints
Parking start point
There's space for parking on the right hand side of the road just before turning right into the village when approaching from the south.
Church
You pass a very well kept church on the right before turning right into the village main street and passing an elevated bar on the left.
Concrete path
Just after passing the main village buildings take the narrow concrete path on the right heading down off the main road in to the valley.
Farm buildings
Follow the concrete road around down and around a right hand bend at the end of the valley to rise again the other side to pass some farm processing buildings on the left of the road.
Views to hills
After the farm builds you get good views back to Sarakina and the hills
Houses
At the top of the road is a collection of farm houses, you turn left behind a very good example of a typical traditionally constructed stone building.
Hair Pin
At a sharp left hair pin bend ignore the smaller path going straight on and continue around the bend tuirning sharp left.
Turn Left
Again ignore the path going straight on at a sharp left turn. It is a dead end.
Climbing north
Staying on the main road after zigzagging upwards the road becomes relatively straight heading north.
Comming to the end of the climb
As the gravel road starts to level off you are presented with a fork in the road, stay on the main road keeping left.
Rock barrier
At the top of the climb the road veers shape left to go around the side of the adjacent hill to the radio mast. Straight ahead a rock barrier has been placed to prevent vehicles using that route. Going straight ahead go over the rock barrier and continue on the road.
Views into the other valley
You have now crossed over the hill and are presented with views in to the neighbouring valley. Looking north you can see the path you will be taking lower down around the hill side.
