Itinerary description
This is a 3 days backpacking hike.
Be prepared, you will need to carry at least a capacity of 2.5L of water and a 0.2 microns certified filter water (or less), plus food, camping gear etc.
1st day: Leave the car at the Santa Catalina State Park parking lot ($12 fee per night) and follow Romero Canyon trail, take a left on Mt. Lemmon trail then take right and hike half hour on the Wilderness of Rock trail until you find a good spot to camp.
2nd day: continue on the Wilderness of Rock trail until you reach the Marshall Gulch Saddle. Continue on Mint Spring trail, follow the E. Carter Canyon rd then take a left on N. Sabino Canyon rd. then a left again on E. Turkey Run rd. Follow Sabino Creek trail then take a left on Aspen Draw, refill your water containers as soon as you can, there wont be more natural supplies further on the trail until tomorrow noon. Continue on Meadow trail (take a rest for lunch at the top of Mount Lemmon!) then Mount Lemmon trail #5 and take a right on Sutherland trail. You will find a sign indicating Samaniego trail and Canada del Oro trail on your right and Sutherland trail / Santa Catalina state park limit on your left. Take a left. The trail begins to be sketchy at this point, look for orange tape, cairns and other signs to lead you through the rocks and dense vegetation. There is a beautiful flat spot to spend the night half hour down with an awesome view of sunset over north Tucson.
3rd day: Continue down on Sutherland trail until reaching the parking lot. There is a 4x4-allowed section that is hard to hike, rocks and heat will heart your feet. Take time to rest and refresh in the waters of Sutherland Wash.
