Itinerary description
This is a short trail that skirts a very beautiful lake. Wildflowers were still prominent in the middle of summer, as well as persistent snow. The trail descends down through a beautiful alpine forest to a pristine lake high in the tahoe national forest. This place is an absolute gem of nature, with butterflies, birds, insects fully alive. I did not see any sign of fish, though. Colorful wildflowers litter the trail around the lake. There are plenty of areas for rock scrambling and back country hiking available. This trail is located near Grouse Ridge lookout, and Glacier Lake along with the crooked lakes trails all connect into this area. I rate this trail moderate because of the uphill on the way back, but it should be easy for anyone in good health. The worst detail of this hike is the drive to it - I made it in a small car but it is NOT recommended at all. High clearance vehicle would be much more desirable, as the 6 mile road leading to the lookout is terribly rocky and steep. To get to this area, turn off of Highway 20 (before it merges with I-80) onto bowman lake road. Follow bowman lake road until you see the sign for Grouse Ridge lookout. Follow this rocky road until you reach an open area with a bathroom. This is a parking area, and the trail to sanford lake is just a bit north of the restroom.
