Itinerary description
High star dunes about 300 KMs north of Riyadh in a very remote and quiet area with dunes extending many KMs east and west of the main road a few KMs north of Al Jamajem.
If you hike about 7 KMs into the high dunes you soon leave behind most of the remnants and detritus of human existence. The basins and small open spaces among the dunes are utopian havens of quiet and still and the views east are magnificent.
The area is protected so no camping or grazing is allowed. Judging by the many diverse tracks left in the sand in the early morning, the wildlife is diverse and thriving.
There has been a lot of rain recently so the sand had a hard crusty layer on top ( a bit like a layer of ice on snow!), making it easier to walk. In September it was much harder going up and down the dunes (but great exercise and fun!)
