Itinerary description

On Labour Day 1947 a group of 230 employees of the Department of Customs and Trade set off from Central Station on a specially chartered service to a picnic at Samford. Minutes after leaving Ferny Grove Station, the last stop, the train gathered too much speed and hurtled out of control to its tragic fate in the valley below.

The resultant loss of 16 lives (some children) and 38 injured, made it - the Camp Mountain Rail Disaster - Australia's worst train accident to date at the time. In the aftermath of the the disaster, Samford Station was closed and the train lines were ripped up, leaving the abandoned rail trail, which today has been paved into a walking and cycling path.

This hike takes us into a number of trails that follow thee old rail line that connected Ferny Grove station to Samford. The trail begins and ends at the Lomandra Picnic Area off Samford Rd. Most of the trail will be through bushland but there is one point we need to cross busy Samford road. The initial cross of Samford road will via the tunnel. After crossing at the tunnel we follow part of the rail trail which has been converted to road before progressing onto the firetrail part of the old rail line.

Just before the trail hits suburbia we take a right follow a track beneath the powerlines back to Samford road. From their we progress into bush trails up to Bygotts road. The hike concludes coming down Sewer road to Y break and then on to Gregors road firetail before we conclude the hike running back on the tracks along Samford road to the start.
