Itinerary description
One of the longest gorges in europe - about 18km long and more than 1,200m decent. ~6 hours including detour.
The trail starts at the Omalos plateau at the outskirts of the white mountains (Lefka Ori) and ends in the mediterranean sea. At some parts the gorge becomes very narrow and you walk between two high walls (my gps lost signal in these places). I took a detour just before the end of the trail and climbed up about 150m on a trail to an old turkish fort with very nice views of the sea and the gorge. Along the way you might meet "wild" Kri-Kri (Cretan ibex), which tends to gather near popoular picnic spots.
The trail ends at a small village - Agia Roumeli - which is reached only by foot or by boat, so plan ahead and check the boat's timetable.
It is a busy trail during season (July - August).
