Itinerary description
Day four of a six day hike known as the Saghro Traverse. Toughest day of the trip.
The morning started with a boulder hop in a dry river bed that was tough going. With an early start we had 10km done by noon and a large chunk of the climb was behind us. We had lunch just short of the final push to the peak and a local shepherd offered us water and mint tea. We decided to skirt the very top of the mountain (there is a path, add about another 50 meters of climb if you are high on energy).
On the way down, with the day seemingly in the bag, we fell off the beaten path and struggled mightily to get back on. Our path was maybe 40 meters to the right of where we should have been but a huge rock face, or a climb back up the mountain was in our way. We stumbled down the rocky hillside for 1 kilometre? until we finally rejoined the established trail.
The campsite had lots of room, spectacular views, sunset and sunrise did not disappoint. Unfortunately the river bed was dry. The village of Igli was visible in the green valley below so we knew water was close by.
It was a tiring day made a little more difficult by a navigational error and lack of water at the campsite.
Tomorrow's hike is: Saghro day 5
