Itinerary description
<<< English >>> Short but beautiful route through the centenarian chestnut trees.
This route is a classic in the area, starting in the village of Casas del Castañar. The road to the village is a good collection of curves.
The path starts on an uninteresting cement track but soon enters the forest. Once inside the forest you have to be very attentive to discover the different specimens of centenarian chestnut trees. They are easily identified by their enormous size but you have to find them among the thousands of normal chestnut trees. These centenary chestnut trees are the few survivors of the Phytophthora plague that devastated in the 15th century the chestnut trees that were originally from the 8th century. The centenarian chestnut trees are huge and are still alive for the most part. The forest was repopulated with oaks and cherry trees (let's not forget that we are in the Jerte valley), presenting the current aspect.
The route is easy, without steep slopes. The centenary chestnut trees are huge and are still alive for the most part. The forest was repopulated with oaks and cherry trees (let's not forget that we are in the Jerte valley), presenting the current aspect.
The route is simple, without steep slopes. Just be careful not to slip on the leafy ground. We walked the route when the chestnut trees had hardly any leaves on their branches and the trees were without much color. On the other hand, the enormous amount of leaves on the path makes walking comfortable and pleasant. It would have been nicer if we had done the route two or three weeks earlier.
All these wonderful trees make this route a must.
