Itinerary description
This is a very beautiful walk indeed.
At the beginning of the climb there was a notice that indicated that the Burg is closed in winter and that the track is cut off at the gate of the Burg, which opens late in March.
As the sun was shining we went up anyway for the views which are lovely.
However, the gate was closed and there was no way around the burg so we had to descend to the road, the K103, and walked to Burg Liebenstein which has of course the same lovely views.
From this Burg we took the Rheinsteig track to Lykershausen, which is actually a very beautiful track. The first highlight is the Brömserkopf an open rock space with a splendid view on the Rhine and the hills beyond with a solid picknick bench.
Leaving the Brömserkopf also means leaving the Rhine views but the track through the Woods to Lykershausen is a very nice one.
From Lykershausen we took paths through the open fields to enjoy the warmth of the December sun across the Knottenberg, 363 m., and after that to the K103 which we crossed to disappear into the woods again, the Kesterter Wald, but as there are no leaves on the trees in December it felt as if walking in open country. The path we took remained more or less at the same height and took us to the Rheinsteig which we followed along some very beautiful viewpoints.amongst which the Wilhelmshöhe and the Pfahlsberg.
From the Wilhelmshöhe you can see the Burgs of first part of this walk and the view on the Rhine is magnificent.
