Butrinto National Park covers the whole of the small peninsula where according to legend the city of Butrinto was founded by the exiles of the destruction of Troy. Although it is believed to date from the 10th century BC the first remains found date from the 8th century BC and the population was Epirote, the 3rd century BC became a Roman colony. At the fall of Constantinople the place passed from hand to hand until the independence of Albania. In the 15th century the area was left uninhabited due to malaria except for the fortifications that were key to controlling the Strait of Corfu.
The visit is a walk through the forest along well-marked paths and some paths that allow us to see the main buildings of the town. We leave the car park in front of the Hotel Livia and go by road to the ticket office where we start the route passes by: the Theater III century BC, the Gym, the Baptistery, the Agora, the Fountain of the Nymphs, the Basilica , the Lake Gate, the Lion Gate, the Acropolis, the Venetian Castle, the Museum, the Temple of Asclepius, the Roman House and finally the Venetian Tower.
If we don't leave the main roads, the route is almost a walk in the shade.
