Itinerary description
Round trekking of Meteora rocks passing by the following monasteries:
- Moni Ypapantés
- Moni Megálou Meteórou
- Monasterio de Varlaam
- Moni Rousánou
- Moni Agíou Nikoláou Anapausás
August 5, 2023 – Starting Time: 9:40 a.m. Weather: Fully sunny with no clouds, and not excessively hot (28°C at the beginning of the trek, increasing to 36°C in the afternoon).
The round trekking took 7 and a half hours to cover a distance of 17 km. The elevation gain was approximately 575 meters, with a descent of 570 meters. Keep in mind that the total time includes stops for monastery visits: 1 hour at Varlaam, 45 minutes at Rousánou, and 25 minutes at Agíou Nikoláou. Therefore, you can reduce the trekking time by spending less time at the monasteries or skipping them altogether.
The trek starts from the Vrachos Kastraki Camping site (see Pic01/viewpoint "Starting point of the trekking" / "Ending point of the trekking"). However, the actual "ascent" (see Pic03) begins near the parking lot of Hotel Doupiani House (see Pic02/viewpoint "Starting point of the trekking"). From there, follow a sporadically marked but clear path. The trail transitions from narrow rocky sections to broader paths through the forest (see Pic06). In the forested sections, you might encounter some delightful and curious creatures (see Pic07)! Your first goal is to reach the Moni Ypapantés monastery. After a short distance from there, take the left path at the crossroads (see Pic05/viewpoint "Crossroads"). We took some time to explore the rocky terrain around and above the Moni Ypapantés monastery for its breathtaking landscapes (see, for example, Pic08-Pic09-Pic10). The path eventually becomes a paved road passing by the monasteries. As a grand finale, it leads through the town and back to the camping area.
Enjoy the trekking experience, but remain cautious as the path can become slippery on wet Meteora rocks. And don't forget to protect yourself from the sun's rays!
