Itinerary description
We walked this route in april, when the water was low after a dry winter. In times of high water a small detour on the way back may be necessary. From the beach (waypoint) you can check this.
The approach of this route follows the 'ecopista do dao' for several kilometres. This is an abandoned railway that was transformed into a bike and walking route. (read all about it on http://www.ecopista-portugal.com, also in english and dutch). The return on the other side of the Rio Dao through forest, village and riverside back to Vimieiro, where the railway station of Sta. Comba Dao is situated.
We had difficulties finding our way to cross the river Dao near Vimieiro. A police officer advised us to take the IP3 highway (!), which we did as there was no other possibility, he said. Later on we found out there is a pedestrian bridge as well. Just before accessing the IP3, turn left at the busstop, indicated dead end street, and following the riverside most likely will do the job.
