Itinerary description
Walked this trail with my wife and two kids (13 and 8 years old).
The summer trail to the Musala peak (2925m) starts at the top of the Yastrebets lift at 2369m. The lift starts in Borovets and takes around 20 minutes with an ascent of around 1000m.
The first half of the trail is an easy walk without any ascent. It passes through the higher sections of the Borovets ski slopes. Ascent starts once the first mountain hut (and the first lake) is reached.
The section from the first to the second mountain hut is my favourite, passing a few beautiful lakes, occasionally hopping over large stones and mountain streams.
The last section (last 1 km) of the trail starts at the second mountain hut (aka Everest) with steeper parts. We didn't have any snow or ice on the path, and there was no wind, so the ascent was smooth, although we did make more quick breaks than other climbers due to our youngest member.
Views from the Musala peak were beautiful, we had really good weather and visibility. Temperature at the top (end of June) was around 10C.
An easy walk back from Musala to the top of the Yastrebets lift took us 3 hours. Care should be taken to return to the last ride downhill, which is usually around 18h (check the official website for accurate timetables).
