Itinerary description

During the tourist season, this trail has a kiosk at both ends charging an entrance fee.
(Update I did this trail again April 2020 and many of the areas where you walked through and jumped across rocks to cross the stream have had wooden bridges and trestles put over them, making the walk a lot easier to follow. the trail has also been very well sign-posted )
The trail is well marked but it can easily be lost, so keep to the red and yellow trail marks.
The pathway covers muddy areas, rocky boulders, low tree branches and large tree roots. Several step ways including a tall wooden one which is in need of repair. missing a few handrails and step planks.
The hiking trail is about 4 km in length of moderate (spring/summer/autumn) to hard (winter) difficulty. Especially after a rainfall, the beginning of the descent is very muddy and treacherous. Waterproof shoes or sandals are strongly recommended, as the stream leading to the waterfall has to be crossed numerous times, often inevitably through the water. Rich vegetation (mainly plat-anus trees, wild berries and local flowers and herbs) and animal life (mainly local species of butterflies, small reptiles, birds and small mammals) can be observed along the way, as well as old stone bridges and water mills before it culminates with the Richtis Waterfall and beach, making Richtis gorge trail one of the most diversified hiking experiences in Crete

Plunge Mill

One of three that you pass. As the water flow was not enough to drive a mill. The locals created a channel to take some of the water into a pond or a dam several metre's higher than the mill. Then sluice gates were opened that flowed through the mills wheel which drove the grinding stone and emptied back into the stream If you look above the ruins windows you can just make out the wall of the dam

The wall shows the perimeter of the dam, to the left of it through the undergrowth you will find the hole where the water ran down into the below mill

Down a long winding wooden stairway. Some of the railings and foot steps are broken or missing so care and attention is required. At the foot turn right under the foliage and it opens out into the waterfall area with a wooden seating and bench

Small area of the falls. The water although small in area is deep enough to submerge if your brave enough to cope with the chilly water. Good place to lunch and rest up a bit.

Continue on after this building and onto beach. Area under trees with many stone seating places and a walled tap for filling up of fresh water. Shingle beach, good swimming area (although I personally don't enjoy shingle beaches)

End of walk as recorded. However we returned back along the same route to our parked cars, so walk does not show as a loop.
