Itinerary description

Climb the recently made up track to the col des 3 fontaines. Then steeply over rocky terrain to the summit where refreshments are available most of the year.
Follow the ridge east and drop down briefly towards Sare before traversing left to the breche of Athekaleun.
Continue down to the railway track , the 3 fontaines and then take the infrequently used trail towards Ascain.
If using public transport allow an additional 20 minutes to walk to the start from the village centre.

To the memorable ascent of Empress Eugenia in 1859. On a day trip from Biarritz by horse and carriage the party stopped at the 3 fontaines for a large lunch, which involved watching an exhibition Pelote match as well as music when the empress danced a fandango.
