Rhodos: Epta Piges

Onderweg van Kolymbia aan de oostkust naar Archipoli, kom je na enkele kilometers aan de Epta Piges (Zeven Bronnen). Het is een schaduwrijk bebost en dus koeler gebied. De zeven bronnen voeden beekjes, die bijna nooit droog staan. De Italianen maakten hier in 1931 een tunneltje waardoor de beekjes uitmonden in een meertje, waarmee vroeger de Kolymbia regio van water werd voorzien.

Driving from Kolymbia on the east coast to Archipoli for a kilometers, you will pass the Epta Piges (Seven Springs). It is a shaded, wooded and therefore cooler area. The seven springs feed small streams, which almost never run dry. The Italians made a tunnel in 1931 so that the streams flow into a small lake, which used to provide the Kolymbia region with water.


Aan de bushalte op de doorgaande weg, loopt een asfaltweg omhoog door de bossen naar een ruime parkeerplaats en een taverna, nabij de bronnen. In de schaduw van grote platanen en naaldbomen kan je hier wat drinken of eten op een terras, maar alleen zul je er wel zelden of nooit zijn...

At the bus stop on the main road, an asphalt road goes up through the woods to a spacious parking lot and a taverna near the springs. In the shade of large plane trees and coniferous trees, you can have a drink or eat on a terrace, but you will rarely or never be alone over there ...


Je kunt hier naar het meertje wandelen door de donkere stenen tunnel, waar enkelhoog water doorheen stroomt. De tunnel is 75cm breed, 1m70 hoog en ongeveer 200m lang. Maar je kunt ook buiten de tunnel om over de heuvel, droogvoets het meertje bereiken. We wandelen een 100-tal meter ver omlaag langs de asfaltweg en nemen het pad naar rechts het bos in en dalen af naar het meertje.

You can walk to the lake through the dark stone tunnel, wading through the ankle-high waterflow. The tunnel is 75cm wide, 1m70 high and about 200m long. But you can also reach the lake with dry feet. Walk for about 100 meters down the asphalt road and take the path to the right into the forest and descend to the lake where the tunnel ends.


Terug op de asfaltweg dalen we verder af naar de verkeersweg, waar we links houden en achter de bushalte weer het bos in gaan. We komen voorbij een grot links en lopen verder langs het smalle maar goed zichtbare pad door het bos. Na 3-400m komen we aan de ingang van het tunneltje en wat verder is de taverne. We steken rechts het bruggetje over. Even zoeken of we de zeven bronnetjes vinden (er staan genummerde bordjes in de bedding) en volgen dan verder het pad nabij het beekje.

Back on the asphalt road, descend further on to the main road, go left and behind the bus stop back into the woods. You pass a cave on the left. Continue along the narrow but well visible path through the woods. After 3-400m you arrive at the entrance of the tunnel and a bit further is the tavern. Cross the bridge on the right an look for the seven sources (there are numbered signs in the bed) and then follow the path to the left near the stream.


Al snel bocht het pad rechts omhoog langs de beboste helling. We nemen enkele hindernissen in de vorm van omgevallen bomen die over het pad liggen en klauteren de helling omhoog en het bos uit. Het pad is hier nogal stoffig: na een regenbui zou het er wel eens er glad kunnen zijn! Kinderwagens en rolwagens neem je beter niet mee op dit stuk.
Boven komen we op veel vlakkere grond. Langs een muurtje wandelen we naar een brede grindweg door een olijfgaard en voorbij wat stallingen of schuurtjes.

Soon the path turns right up along the wooded slope. We pass some obstacles in the form of fallen trees lying across the path and keep climbing up the slope and out of the forest. The path over here is rather dusty: after a rain shower it may well be very slippery! So it is better not to take strollers or wheelchairs on this walk!
Above the slope and out of the woods, the terrain is much flatter. Along a wall we walk to a wide gravel road through an olive grove and past some stalls or sheds.


Op de Y-splitsing links houden. Na 275m is er een zijweg met een bord met 'Epta Piges' (in't grieks). We gaan linksaf omlaag, langs de bosrand en langs hekkens. Hier en daar kijken we uit over de groene vallei. Aan een kapelletje houden we rechts aan en komen terug op de parking. De taverne aan de bronnen is vanop deze parking ook te bereiken.

At the Y-junction keep left. After 275m there is a side road with a sign with 'Epta Piges' (in Greek writing). Go left down the road, along the edge of the forest and along some fences. Here and there is a nice look over the green valley. At a chapel keep right to return to the parking lot. The tavern at the sources can also be reached from this parking.
