Itinerary description
Waypoints
Starting point
Reykjadalur, the Valley of Stream, is a beautiful geothermical region close to the southern town Hveragerdi. The hike starts when you cross a bridge over a river.
Directions on the way.
We continued walking along the road. The name of the valley, Reykjadalur, means Steam Valley and you will understand why when the valley opens up after the hike.
Flora
The area's vegetation has been affected by its geothermal activity and includes lush wetland plant communities thriving near hot streams and warm springs as well as mossy terrain in dryer patches. Diverse and colourful thermophilic microorganisms, classified as Bacteria and Archaea, of which some are very rare, add to the area's character.
Hot spring
Hot pools by the trail. On the first part of the trail, there are several hot springs and mid pools to the left.
Beautiful panorama
It’s an interesting trail across a beautiful landscape with spectacular sights along the way.
Views
Resist the temptation to leave the main path to explore. Remember, hikers are required to remain on marked trails to prevent damage to the area’s unspoiled natural beauty.
We go on hiking
The hike is relatively easy. I would say that only one spot would be difficult for people.
Hiking the Trail
The great thing about this lovely hike is that it is not only a way to get to the hot river. It's also a very scenic part of Iceland, so take your time and enjoy the views.
Waterfall
You will see a canyon on your left with a beautiful waterfall cascading down into the valley.
Djúpagilsfoss Waterfall
This waterfall, Djúpagilsfoss, named after its home canyon, Djúpagilm, and its surrounding scenery is absolutely breathtaking, especially given the panoramic views enabled by your high vantage point.
Panorama
We strongly advise to stay on track and not go wandering around. The ground simply isn’t safe and people have fallen into grass-hidden hot pools.
Path
The trail can get narrow at several points and may be slippery if the weather is damp.
Wooden bridge across the river
The trail is easy to follow, as there is only 1 way you can go.
Klambragil Canyon
Before we went bathing in the river, we continued to follow the trail a bit further to Klambragil Canyon. The area is incredibly colorful and uniquely characterized by the smoky (well, really steamy) pillars rising all around the paths. It is easy to see where to follow the tracks into the valley.
Bathing area
You soak in a natural hot spring in the middle of the mountains in Iceland. When will you ever be able to say that again?! And yes, it is just as amazing as you think it will be.
Swim in a geothermic hot river!
Reykjadalur Valley is a fantastic option for bathing in one of the legendary Icelandic hot springs. It’s really neat to think about the fact that these geothermally-heated waters are caused by scorching-hot magma in the Earth’s crust. We get to reap the warm water benefits while being reminded of Mother Nature’s awesome and astounding power.
