Itinerary description
This is one of my favorite trails in El Retiro, Antioquia. The technical difficulty "Difficult" is due to the trail being lost to nature in a few spots, making it a necessity to either find alternate routes, or sometimes even cut through the bushes. There are plenty of water sources throughout the route, and places with ample space to set up camp overnight. It's quite safe (I completed the trail many times), and both the beginning and end of trail are on backroads where you can use find transportation (with small farms and general grocery stores where you can ask for help). No guide necessary, and no need to enter private properties. You can extend the route to form a complete loop back to El Retiro. I usually started and ended it when reaching the road since I'm not particularly fond of hiking in busy roads. I thought of continuing following the creek along the road but I haven't tried that yet so I can't recommend it. Please don't litter.
Waypoints
Cantera/Quarry
You can go up to the top of quarry, being careful. There's a nice view.
Quebrada/Creek
The creek goes through the bottom of the canyon. You can go down to it and follow it against the current until you reach the old school.
Casas/Houses
Follow the trail. Summit is about 2 kilómeters.
No dejar basura. You can rest and set up camp in this area. Leave no trace. There are two trails at this point. Follow the left one (right one takes you to Minas).
Meterse al bosque/Into the woods
El sendero es difícil de encontrar. Hay que entrar al bosque. Trail is hard to find. Go into the woods.
Bajar por los pinos/Down through the pines
As soon as you can, go down through the pine woods.
Carretera/Road
Seguir la carretera hacia la derecha. Follow the road to the right.
Izquierda/Left
Turn left on the fork, then turn right down through the pine woods. No trail.
Campamento/Campsite
No dejar basura. This is the best spot to set up camp. There is water nearby and the ground is level. Leave no trace.
Ruinas/Ruins
No entrar a las ruinas. El techo y paredes pueden colapsar. Do not go into the ruins. Roof and walls may collapse.
Bajar a la casa/Down to the house
You must go down to the house to follow the trail.
Puente/Bridge
Subida a carretera/Ascent to road
This is a good place to leave the creek and go up to the road. It's possible to continue through the creek, but I think there's no easy exit until "la miel" bridge.
Tienda/Store
A good place to rest and buy water.
