Itinerary description

Refugio Plantat (3130m) is a refuge on the way to Volcan San Jose which is the most southern peak with more than 5000m altitude in the world. The trip to the refugio and back can be done as a one day trek.
The trail starts few kilometers behind Lo Valdes on the road to Termas Valle de Colina. It's easy to spot: there is a lesser road going left from the main road, a small farm and a parking space there (don't forget to tip the locals for "guarding" your car). The first section leads through rocky terrain, but it's not too steep. After 30 minutes you reach the Engorda plateau which you need to pass. If you follow my trail, please follow the straight line I took when returning - it's much better than the one I took when ascending, unsure of the way. The most challenging section follows after La Engorda. It's a rather steep ascent, starting at 2600 to 2850m, and it's a reason why I mark this trail as moderate difficulty. The final section to the refugio is again easier. The descent follows the same way. Refugio is the only place where you can get clean water easily, so prepare accordingly.
