Itinerary description
You can park the car in Grau Roig. There is plenty of space and for free.
The hike begins with a direct climb following a steep firewire. After arriving at a Coma d'Estremera tarn , it keeps on ascending along a rocky path.
When reaching the port (Collada de Montmalús) there are great views to Grau Roig to the N and Montmalús Tarn to the South.
There is a steep path (W) that climbs to Montmalús Peak. The summit is pretty flat and wide. From that moment on you have to follow the ridge. The trail becomes very isolated. When the path is faint there are usually carns; the orientation in general is pretty easy since it is only a matter of walking without losing altitude
The most difficult moment, in terms of orientation, occurs when arriving at the base of Pic de Ribuls. Even though one could keep on following the ridge, that would mean doing some difficult and pretty exposed scrambles, which is not the intend of this hike. Instead, you have to lose some altitude and contour the Peak by the North side. After that you have to climb up again along a grassy slope, with an easy scramble, which may be difficult if wet. Please take into account that there is neither evident path nor carns in this part.
Once in the ridge again, you keep on walking until a plateau where you have a 360 degree perspective of the whole area. The descent to the Illa Tarn can be done by following the waymarked GR. The guarded hut Refugi de l’illa is located at the lower part of the Tarn, very close to the dam. The Refugi is brand new, with great facilities and friendly staff.
