Itinerary description
On a fine day, this route is one of the best day hikes I know. From the Refuge Wallon the trail climbs up to the Col d'Arratille past the Lac d'Arratille. In the morning, this climb is almost completely in the shade. It has great views back north, in the direction of the Wallon hut. From the Col d'Arratille, the trail contours around to the Col des Mulets, with wonderful views south to Spain. From the Col des Mulets, the trail descends steeply, and the Vignemale massif comes into view to the south, looming over the Gaube valley. From the Refuge des Oulettes, the trail descends generally gently down the pretty Gaube valley to Lac de Gaube and subsequently Pont d'Espagne.
The trail is easy to follow except on the approach to Col d'Arratille, where the trail markers are hard to find. The trail there stays on the left.
We did the hike after staying in the Wallon hut, which is unfortunately in need of renovation. A decade ago it was in pretty good shape, but since then it appears to have received no attention. But it still has private rooms, making for a reasonably comfortable stay.
